Kos The island that gave the world Hippocrates, father of Medicine and which looks like a huge floating garden. The city is built along a wide bay and catches the eye from the very first moment.

Interesting places to visit

  • The Knights' Castle, an impresive medieval building.
  • Freedom Square, with its huge plane -under the shadow of which Hippocrates is said to have taught- and Roman homes with marvelous mosaics and early Christian basilicas.
  • The Museum, where you will see the status of Hippocrates and other fascinating items of Ancient and Hellenistic and Roman times.
  • The Doric Temple of Venus.
  • The Roman School of Music.
  • The Castle, built by the knights of St John on the ruins of the ancient wall (1450-1478).
  • The Aesculapium.
  • The Stoa of Hippocrates' Medical School.
  • The Altar.
  • The villages Asfendiou, Kardamaina, Pyli, Marmari, Mastichari, Kefalos, Palatia, Astypalaia.

There is a beautiful beach near the town, as well as in other marvelous and quiet places, some of them accessible by bicycle, a means of transport much used in Kos. So, don't miss a ride! Kos is a port of entry and exit. Port customs and sanitary authorities are there, as well as a yacht refuelling station.

Perfectly white houses, dense greenery and the colours of the volcanic soil palette, and a capital city built at the foot of the hill and which used to be fortified in the Middle Ages.

  • Panagia Spiliani (Madona of the Caves) and the monastery where a feast with lots of food and wine takes place each year.
  • The Ancient Acropolis with its remnants of Pelasgic walls.
  • The Town Hall and the Demotic School (Primary) and their archaeological collections with sculptures, ceramics, Hellenistic and Roman inscriptions and 18th-19th century icons.
  • Emporio, where lies the monastery of Kyra Panagia.
  • Nikia, and the monastery of St. John.
  • The Volcano, that due to its soil the ground is very fertile and which is also visible from Nikia.
  • Pali, a fishing village with an excellent beach.

Its inhabitants take great care to preserve their traditions. One of them is their marriage festivities and the matrimonial dance "Perioli" is known to all.
